Januka y Navidad!

On Monday, we spent the day with Teresa walking around Once, the main Jewish neighborhood in Buenos Aires, in search of a menorah. While Judaica shops were few and far between, we managed to find candles, a menorah and gelt! We also noticed that Once has a lot of fabric stores, interesting because the Garment District in NYC is also a historically Jewish area. We came back to our apartment, lit the candles and then headed to the Plaza Republica Oriental del Uruguay for a public menorah lighting. We arranged to meet friends for dinner, so we didn't get to see the actual lighting, but the event was interesting because there were Hasidim, Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Jews, as well as non-Jews, all together.
Christmas Eve has been nice as well. We spent the day walking to Retiro and then came home and cooked dinner. Around midnight we heard fireworks going off. We headed to the terrace on our roof and saw fireworks coming from every corner of the city - and some roman candles from the balcony across the street. Felices Fiestas!
